STAGE 8

On Friday April 27 L.E.J RULER posted a blog talking about the DACA program and the current state it sits in. It discussed a lot of what branch holds the power to make a decision that can completely impact the program and its recipients. In this article the author describes how frustrated they are with the fact that congress has yet to make a decision on such an important matter that affects thousands. The author details how first Trump decided to cancel the program, followed by the announcement that congress would determine a definite decision by march of 2018, and now the latest news that the legislative branch has ordered for the program to be brought to a supreme court. A constant back and forth with a system that has the potential to affect thousands.

In my opinion, I agree with the authors post regarding the frustration that this issue Is bringing. Over 800,000 immigrants benefit from this Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival. And the requirements to obtain protection from the program aren’t simple. Having your future tossed around like it means nothing is discouraging. It certainly makes you feel like you’re working hard for nothing. The potential possibilities that we could one day graduate but not be able to legally obtain a job is worrying…

Consider running a race where you win first place but don’t receive a metal…would you re consider running in the first place?

Trump Nuclear Withdrawal (Blog stage 3)

On May 9thth 2018 the NYtimes published an article by Caroline Crosson about President trumps latest decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. This decision is an Enormous deal for global stability. It’s a major decision with huge impact for national and international security. This is crucial and matters for a lot of reasons. It took years of negotiating to get to this agreement of limiting Iran’s nuclear production in the first place. Also, Parties of the agreement including allies of the us wanted the deal to hold up strongly. By pulling the US from this agreement Trump is sending a clear message that he will act unilaterally when he sees fit and wont maintain international consensus. Just as a Refresher, the Iran deal was one of the signature foreign policy achievements of the Obama administration. It was an Agreement between Iran and major world powers singed in 2015. Iran, US, Britain, France, china, Germany, Russia, and European union were all part of the agreed global plan to limit Iran’s nuclear production over number of years. Trump said the deal is “defective at its core”. And thinks it didn’t go far enough in limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities and his administration Is making moves to re instate economic sanctions against Iran.
His actions are not only impacting the US but its also causing reactions of others.
This could increase tension between US vs Russia and China. Although Trump thinks it will help upcoming negotiations with South Korea as it shows the US isn’t willing to stay in “bad deals”. But in honesty, it’s actually signaling that the US will do whatever it wants regardless of treaties or agreements. So why would north Korea, sing any agreement with US?

Pulling out of the agreement also adds tension to the middle east which is already in crisis over Syria where Iran and Russia play a major part. If Iran gets nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia, would also want them destabilizing the region even more.

Additionally, Trump has added isolation to the US in a world stage. Withdrawal from Iran deal, despite protesting of current and former advisors, is only the latest.if we back track a bit, he has Pulled out of transpacific partnership trade agreement, , made the US the only country in the world to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. And now ended US participation in what was seen as major  breakthrough in diplomatic relations with Iran in progress towards peace. Trump has built his reputation on a “art of deal” but as president he’s shown himself more willing to pull out of agreements than making new ones.

Technology VS Wall (blog stage 4)

On Thursday, January 11, 2018, CNN published an article about “The answer to border security is technology, not wall”. The author Henry Cuellar, discusses that building an actual wall would be ineffective to reduce the population of the people who are entering undocumented. While it may make it harder for immigrants to cross and for the black market to continue bringing drugs across the border, it wouldn’t stop it one hundred percent. Additionally, it would cost an absurd amount of money. To solve this problem, Cuellar suggests that instead of building a physical wall, the government should increase the use of the modern technology to better secure it. Using modernization such as cameras, fixed towers and underground sensors would be a more efficient, accurate, and inexpensive way to better secure the borders. In my opinion I totally agree with Henry innovating idea. First of all,  don’t believe that building a wall will stop undocumented immigrants from coming across the Mexico US border. Not suggesting that the use of modern technology would do so either but taking into consideration the expenses differences, it’s obvious what option is more beneficial to securing the border. Secondly, the relationship between US and Mexico would be greatly impacted in a way that may not bring great benefits. If the United States decide to make a wall, it is possible it can have a negative effect on the trade relationships the two countries have developed. A better solution to solve this problem should be to remedy with the Mexican government, attempting to strengthen the Mexican laws, enforcing the US Border Patrol coordinate interdiction efforts, Both performing joint patrols, as well as respond to border violence and pursue prosecution of criminals of transnational criminal organizations together. For these reasons, I believe that the United States should use the modern technology to certainly reduce the number of undocumented people entering the US but more importantly to maintain a good relationship with Mexico.
