On May 9thth 2018 the NYtimes published an article by Caroline Crosson about President trumps latest decision
to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. This decision is an Enormous deal for
global stability. It’s a major decision with huge impact for national and
international security. This is crucial and matters for a lot of reasons. It took
years of negotiating to get to this agreement of limiting Iran’s nuclear
production in the first place. Also, Parties of the agreement including allies
of the us wanted the deal to hold up strongly. By pulling the US from this
agreement Trump is sending a clear message that he will act unilaterally when
he sees fit and wont maintain international consensus. Just as a Refresher, the
Iran deal was one of the signature foreign policy achievements of the Obama administration.
It was an Agreement between Iran and major world powers singed in 2015. Iran,
US, Britain, France, china, Germany, Russia, and European union were all part
of the agreed global plan to limit Iran’s nuclear production over number of
years. Trump said the deal is “defective at its core”. And thinks it didn’t go
far enough in limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities and his administration Is
making moves to re instate economic sanctions against Iran.
His
actions are not only impacting the US but its also causing reactions of others.
This could increase tension between US vs
Russia and China. Although Trump thinks it will help upcoming negotiations with
South Korea as it shows the US isn’t willing to stay in “bad deals”. But in
honesty, it’s actually signaling that the US will do whatever it wants
regardless of treaties or agreements. So why would north Korea, sing any
agreement with US?
Pulling out of the agreement also adds tension
to the middle east which is already in crisis over Syria where Iran and Russia play
a major part. If Iran gets nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia, would also want them
destabilizing the region even more.
Additionally, Trump has added isolation to
the US in a world stage. Withdrawal from Iran deal, despite protesting of
current and former advisors, is only the latest.if we back track a bit, he has Pulled
out of transpacific partnership trade agreement, , made the US the only country
in the world to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. And now ended US
participation in what was seen as major breakthrough
in diplomatic relations with Iran in progress towards peace. Trump has built his
reputation on a “art of deal” but as president he’s shown himself more willing
to pull out of agreements than making new ones.
