federally high

would you like to smoke?
On January 1, 2018, California became the latest state to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana. Although the plant is legal in 29  states and the District of Columbia for recreational and medicinal use, the federal government still classifies marijuana as a “Controlled substance,” making it a federal crime to possess, buy, or sell the substance. Many who are against the legalization of marijuana would argue that legalizing it would cause an issue in public safety. They stress that it would lead to more accidents on highways as well as more crime in our society. The truth Is that none of their statistics have validation because there is no proof to support those statements. On the other hand I think that a strong argument can be made stating that in fact the legalization of marijuana by the federal government would come with state and federal benefits. For example, it would start by lowering the number of people who are in jail for harmless crimes. Also, once legalized, marijuana can be taxed potentially producing billions of dollars annually in profit. Not only that but legalizing and regulating marijuana could create jobs and economic opportunities as it would bring the nation’s largest cash crop. On a separate note, Marijuana cures and prevents Alzheimer’s and Glaucoma, it helps relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and even helps relieve pain in patients as well. This has been found to be true while marijuana is federally illegal. Can you only imagine what could potentially be discovered would it be legal?

The federal government should legalize and regulate marijuana as it would bring more benefit than it would harm. Some states have already taken the initiative to make it legal and regulate it and still there has been no sign of a negative outcomes. In addition marijuana can be used for far more other purposes than simple enjoyment. ‘

Could you tell me the last time you heard of someone wrecking a car because they were “high”? or maybe the last time someone charged of domestic violence was due to their hallucinations?

  1. Hello Osvaldo,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article and agree that it is time for America to not only make marijuana legal for medicinal needs but recreational as well. However, I think that you need more evidence as to why the people are against it are and more evidence on how it is exactly beneficial for our country. If they don't have any substantial evidence of how it would be beneficial then, you could suggest ways for them to complete studies and how they could determine that it is best to legalize it for all.
Great blog and an interesting read.

  2. Hey there Osvaldo!
I agree with a lot of what Tiffanys said in her comments, and I too thoroughly enjoyed reading this Blog post. The fact that Marijuana isn't legal on the federal level in 2018 is disheartening, but the fact that Marijuana is still considered a Schedule 1 Controlled substance (the highest ranking) is pure lunacy. It is almost unbelievable when you look at the other "less abusive" controlled substance categories. Marijuana resides in the highest most dangerous controlled substance group deeming it (in the DEA's point of view) utterly useless for having any medical benefits. Marijuana was said to be left in the Schedule 1 Controlled substance group with killers like heroin and meth because it doesn't have any currently accepted medical benefits, along with a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug under medical supervision. But with all of the research proving Marijuana and its components like THC, and CBD has various medical benefits, it baffles me Marijuana is still somehow at the top of the list. THC can increase appetite and reduce nausea. THC may also decrease pain, inflammation (swelling and redness), and muscle control problems. Unlike THC, CBD is a cannabinoid that doesn't make people "high." It may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation, controlling epileptic seizures, and possibly even treating mental illness and addictions. Alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana killing 40,000 people a year while marijuana hasn't killed a single person. Tabacco has been scientifically proven to be one of the most dangerous and ruthless killers but is still sold in every gas station, HEB, a convenient store you walk into. There is more at play with Big Pharma and prescription pain pill suppliers pertaining to marijuana. The endless possibilities marijuana seemingly presents with a lower overall cost of production is terrifying to pharmaceutical companies that have been raking in billions for decades. But with the Trump Administration in full effect, with Jeff Sessions as attorney general, the foreseeable future for marijuana is quite a gloom. Maybe sometime in the future, my kids will get to see the worlds most patient drug finally get its day in the sun.
